Coco Gauff a déjà accompli beaucoup de choses à seulement 22 ans. L’Américaine abordera l’US Open après une nouvelle période très convaincante sur le circuit WTA.
Actuelle 4e mondiale, elle a remporté son premier titre du Grand Chelem lors de l’US Open 2023, en dominant Aryna Sabalenka en trois sets en finale. Elle compte également plusieurs titres en WTA 1000 et vient d’en ajouter un nouveau à son palmarès en remportant le tournoi de Cincinnati pour la deuxième fois.
Gauff a battu Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 en finale à Cincinnati et n’a concédé qu’un seul set durant l’ensemble du tournoi. Des résultats encourageants, auxquels s’ajoutent les évolutions relevées par plusieurs anciennes joueuses et entraîneurs dans différents secteurs de son jeu.
Son service a particulièrement retenu l’attention, après avoir constitué l’un de ses principaux points faibles la saison dernière. Rennae Stubbs a récemment estimé que son geste était beaucoup plus fluide et a même révélé avoir envoyé un message de félicitations à Gavin MacMillan, son entraîneur en biomécanique, après le tournoi de Cincinnati.
Mark Petchey a lui aussi constaté la différence en observant la jeune Américaine dans l’Ohio.
“I was texting Lindsay [Davenport] and saying this is about as well as I have ever seen her serve, and this is about as well as I have ever seen her play,” Petchey said on the Big T Podcast.
“That was what was coming at me through the TV screen, and it’s not let up throughout the whole tournament.”
Petchey a souligné qu’à ce niveau, Gauff posait un problème supplémentaire à ses adversaires : ces dernières peuvent commencer à penser que leur tennis habituel ne suffira pas face à elle.
“I think the thing with somebody as great as Coco, when she is playing that well, is that you don’t feel as though your normal game is good enough, so you actually play under your best because you are forcing it all the time.”
Petkovic souligne l’évolution « effrayante » du coup droit de Gauff
Andrea Petkovic sait parfaitement ce que signifie affronter Gauff.
L’ancienne 9e mondiale avait affronté l’Américaine alors âgée de seulement 15 ans, en demi-finales à Linz. L’expérimentée Allemande se souvient à quel point il était déjà difficile de trouver des espaces sur le court à ce stade précoce de la carrière de Gauff.
“When she was 15 years old, I played her in the semi-final in Linz, and she went on to win the title,” Petkovic said.
“She made the court feel so small that I felt like I had to get closer and closer to the lines, and eventually I started missing.
I feel like she is back to basics, in that back in the day, if you can say so, it was impossible to break her.”
Petkovic s’est également souvenue de l’agressivité avec laquelle Gauff servait lors de cette rencontre.
“She was going for first and second serves, she was serving second serves at around 95mph, and there was a double fault here or there, but I had no chance breaking her.
I think I lost 6-4, 6-4, and it was a break each in the set. And she was not missing her forehand. She was not necessarily putting as much pressure on you.”
C’est précisément sur ce dernier point que Petkovic estime que Gauff a désormais franchi un nouveau cap.
Le coup droit a souvent été présenté comme le côté le plus fragile du jeu de l’Américaine de 22 ans. Selon Petkovic, il est toutefois devenu beaucoup plus fiable, tout en permettant à Gauff de mettre ses adversaires sous pression.
“This is the scary part, because now it looks like her forehand is stable and she can put pressure on that side on you,” Petkovic concluded.
Gauff veut atteindre son meilleur niveau à l’US Open
Gauff estime elle-même qu’il existe une grande différence entre la joueuse qu’elle était l’an dernier et celle qui s’apprête à retrouver New York cette fois-ci.
Après son sacre à Cincinnati, l’Américaine a reconnu avoir traversé une période difficile en 2025 et avoir eu le sentiment que son jeu évoluait dans la mauvaise direction.
“I was just frustrated with my game, and I felt I was declining, and it's not something any player wants to feel,” Gauff said after taking the Cincinnati title.
“You always want to feel like you're getting better, and at the worst, just plateauing.
“Last year I was in a weird predicament, made sudden decisions that most people probably wouldn't do before a Slam, but I think it's worth it. Obviously, I feel it's night and day the player I am from last year to now.”
La championne de l’US Open 2023 avait auparavant expliqué que son objectif, durant la tournée nord-américaine sur dur, était d’atteindre son meilleur niveau à New York.
Après Cincinnati, elle estimait que son processus de progression avançait dans la bonne direction.
“I'm on the road to that,” Gauff said. “I feel I got put in a lot of different scenarios over the course in the last four weeks, and I guess the biggest hope for New York is definitely to be able to learn and do better in each scenario that I can put in.”
