L’Américain sait qu’il dispose d’une belle opportunité à New York, mais refuse de se projeter dans les dernières étapes d’un tournoi qui n’a pas encore commencé. Avancer match après match sera essentiel pour rester concentré et ne pas gaspiller inutilement son énergie.

Revenant sur les performances d’Alexander Zverev, de Carlos Alcaraz et de Novak Djokovic dans les tournois majeurs, ainsi que sur celles d’Arthur Fils et de Rafael Jodar ces dernières semaines, Shelton a déclaré en conférence de presse : "I think it would be disrespectful to think: 'There is no Sinner, it's a great opportunity'. When there are players who have won Grand Slams and big titles and are in great shape. Zverev has won a Grand Slam this year; there is Novak in the main draw. All Americans are dangerous on this surface. I always respect everyone."
"I felt great in Montreal (he defended the title in Canada, ed.). I'm proud of the consistency I showed there, the attitude from a mental point of view and, above all, the level of tennis expressed.
