Denis Shapovalov va bien. C’est la principale information communiquée par le joueur canadien depuis le Masters 1000 de Cincinnati, où il a réussi ses débuts jeudi 13 août en dominant nettement le Français Adrian Mannarino (6-1, 6-4).
"It's amazing to be back on the court and feel good with my ankle. It's definitely been a frustrating year for how my body has felt. But the game was there. I played well", a expliqué le joueur de 27 ans après la rencontre, rassurant ainsi ses supporters après un problème physique qui avait suscité l’inquiétude.

Shapovalov s’était blessé en finale à Los Cabos, souffrant d’une sorte d’entorse. Il avait ensuite dû disputer le tournoi de Montréal, devant son public, sans être dans des conditions physiques optimales. Opposé à l’Américain Svajda au premier tour, il avait abandonné au cours du troisième set, alors qu’il était mené 3-0. "I started to notice that other parts of the body were also affected. I felt muscle tension, discomfort in the hamstrings, quadriceps and even the knee. All this was a consequence of having compensated for the pain in my ankle," avait-il déclaré.
"Now I feel good on the court, so I'm very happy. The conditions are very different. It's much faster here than in Montreal and I prefer fast conditions. For me, adaptation is easier this way," a expliqué Denis Shapovalov, qui s’apprête à relever le défi du deuxième tour face à l’Espagnol Rafael Jodar. Ce dernier est l’homme en forme du moment, après avoir atteint la finale à Washington puis les demi-finales au Canada. L’Espagnol pourrait toutefois être diminué par la fatigue accumulée et, dans ce cas, le Canadien tentera de créer la surprise.
Sa finale à Los Cabos a incontestablement redonné confiance au joueur de 27 ans : "It was a fantastic week. In the end, however, I ran out of energy in the final and some problems arose. Then I had to change tournaments in a hurry to go to Montreal. I probably shouldn't have participated in that tournament, considering my physical condition, but I tried to give my best for the home fans,” a-t-il conclu.
